Southside Family Charter School presents the Keep the Dream Alive! Civil Rights History Presentation at Southside Family Charter School (4537 3rd Avenue S, Minneapolis, MN 55419). Keep the Dream Alive! is presented by 6th-8th grade students. It documents the triennial Southside Civil Rights Trip and gives diverse audiences an opportunity to learn about the power of young people to create social change, and provides a forum for community discussions of ongoing civil rights issues. The community is invited to this important event at 7 p.m. in the Southside Family Charter School gym. There is a $10 recommended donation.
Every three years, Southside Family Charter School students and staff travel the Southern United States on the Civil Rights Trip, focusing on the influence of children in the struggle. Students meet with veterans of the Movement and learn about such topics as the Nashville sit-ins, Albany, Georgia’s voter registration efforts, human rights abuses in Americus, Georgia, rural development, Gullah and Geechee cultural preservation, the Birmingham Children’s Crusade, the Lowndes County, Alabama movement, and McCombs student action against segregation.
The Civil Rights Trip gives students a solid education in the Civil Rights Movement, and inspires them to be active, engaged citizens in the world. The Keep the Dream Alive! Presentation is a way for students to share their experiences and engage the community in questions of social justice and civil rights history. Students and staff are especially proud to present Keep the Dream Alive in 2011 which marks the 50 year anniversary of the Freedom Rides.
