Civil Rights Slideshow Premiere
Bring the slideshow to your school or group!
We had a full house at the Pillsbury House Theatre for the premiere of the 2008 Civil Rights trip slideshow on Tuesday October 7th. Students shared their experiences and knowledge.
Lilli began the presentation, "We started learning about history long before we traveled south." From other students we heard about the laws and institutions that supported racism and greed. We viewed historical images and learned about the resistance that continued through Reconstruction and the long decades of legalized segregation and discrimination. Now, Alexandra told us, "we were ready to dig into the history of what most people think of as the Civil Rights Movement."
We then saw the photographs and heard about the experiences of their trip south. "I was moved to tears and this really opened up an awareness in me," one viewer told the students.
In March, 25 students from grades 6-8 and their teachers boarded a bus, and traveled 3,000 miles through 8 states to learn from dozens of activists who made significant changes during the Civil Rights Movement, and who continue to be active in their communities today.
This traveling multi-generational classroom is an example of Southside's mission in action. Expanding our classroom into the community is an important part of our curriculum. As teacher Susie Oppenheim says, "The best people to teach about how to change the world are those who have changed the world." Our southern Civil Rights teachers are extremely generous with their time, their knowledge and their inspiration.
We know that this trip makes a difference in the lives of students and our community. Through in-depth study and direct contact, students become engaged in history, and deepen their understanding of the vital part young people can play in creating change.
If you would like to schedule a slideshow presentation in your classroom or at your community event, please call us. We would love to share it with you!
