Meet the SAACP!
The Student Association for the Advancement of Children as People (SAACP) was founded by students at Southside Family Charter School after the school's first study trip through the south to learn about the civil rights movement. Learning from civil rights leaders inspired students to start their own organization to fight against racism, poverty, and injustice. On their own initiative and under the guidance of SFCS teachers, the students learn about events that involve child labor issues and other concerns relevant to children. They analyze those issues, speak publicly about injustices, and call for needed changes. Members of the SAACP have been invited to present the viewpoint of children at rallies and community meetings on welfare reform, affordable housing and issues of world peace. Wherever they visit, students sign up others to become members of the SAACP. To date, they have enrolled over 250 individuals outside the school.
